2024 a new challenge, enamelling silver jewellery
My kiln and enamels arrived in December 2023 down the chimney , dusted off and ready to go
I have watched to many hourse of U tube video’s to count , read the bloggs , visited the forums
This website and its contents are the result of my trials and errors and hopefully some sales to come
Our workshop already consists of tools used for 20 years by my partner for signet ring manufacture
Engraving tools abundant , polishing and cleaning facilities , now I just need practice practice practice
My mini jewellery kiln
Designed for artizans , not mass production & draws little current it suits my workbench
As I only intend to produce a handfull of high quality products per week to sell
My first pair of earrings & 3 pendants partly enamelled + next two earrings on display
These are the result of my first 2 weeks endevours, who said it would be easy, it isn’t
60 Mesh vitreous glass enamel
Not all enamels are the same , I tried cold enamels previously, no kiln required but the results were dull boring and lifeless
Vitreous glass ground fine, water added & painstakingly applied
I am Working under 10 x illuminated magnifing lamp to apply & digital microscope
Multiple layers are required, each one fired inbetween in kiln
Imperfections are inevitable, and will no doubt be a feature that might otherwise be erradicated in mass production.
Vitreous glass enamel has the advantage of never fading in colour, a potential family heirloom in every piece which will be unique as no two products are ever identical
Stages of the process
Stage 1 : the design is cut out of sterling silver sheet, heated & acid treated multiple times
Stage 2 : Numerous layers of coloured enamel applied , fired in kiln between each layer
Stage 3 : when considered suitable clear enamel applied over entire design
Stage 3 : enamel overfilled ready to be ground back by hand with alundum stones
Finishing & polishing
Stage 5 : now matt , having been ground back to the silver & silver emmery polished
In the bottom right photo it has been stoned back
Stage 6 : put back into kiln and re - fired to a high shine on the enamel, silver turns black
Stage 7 : Bottom right image, pendant has been treated in acid to remove black fire stain
Stage 8 : the entire design has to be re polished to return a bright finish to the silver
2nd attempt at flower
I am presently wearing the first attempt at these earrings and getting very nice comments
These have been ground back after enamelling, polished and shepherds crook earwires fitted

Each earring is appx 19mm tall x 15mm at the widest before fitting earwires
If you twist my arm
As you can see in the first set , that I am wearing the colours are reversed, and I got impatient so the enamel is not level
The non matching pendant is all part of the experimentation process , and I will not be supplying chains YET
If you twist my arm I will part with them , after all more practice for me , making more
Chain definitely not included , sentimental
I will replace earwires with new ones

Week Five : And I think I am finally getting the hang of this
A popular design in the world of tatoo art , but much smaller as a pendant , so simplified.
A spoked design experiment, a translucent enamel applied to provide a less plain background
Appx 29mm tall x 23mm wide, my first

Week 14 : Simpler the design, bigger the segments easier it is to enamell, lower selling price

My partner is presently working on the design and engraving process
It is becoming apparent that on average it is taking about 5 hours per pendant

Week 16 : Continuing to experiment, this one took far longer because of the detail

This one took almost 7 hours in total production time including cutting out and engraving

Week 18 : Attempting to do matched pairs for earrings is proving ” interesting ” especially when left and right handed
Solution seems to be less layers of colour , enamelled over the top with clear enamel & the results i am delighted with
Earrings in photo will be provided on sterling silver 925 shepherds crook earwires , disc is 20mm diameter
Extra fine detail like this in a pair so small and they took me almost 12 hours in total production time
Maple leaf sets soon
Week 20 : Now far more confident & experimenting with blending colours
Also creating textures , after all Maple leaves in late summer are mottled, not smooth
I have three sets in production now , each will be a pendant about 33mm height and a pair of earrings 20mm height
Plan is to do Spring , Summer and Autumn , so a selection of virant colours for each season

Week LOST COUNT : Four new designs engraved this week ready for enamelling
All four designs have been cut from sterling silver 925 sheet & depletion gilded
Each design has a larger appx 30mm pendant & a pair of matching appx 20mm earrings
A horses head design in the artwork stage to be engraved very soon
